When we face difficulties, do we truly believe that God will help us? Or in such situations, do we turn away from him, seeking help from people and relying on human strength instead? Indeed, God often uses his servants to help us, but we must also trust that many times he will help us directly. He longs for us to depend on him wholeheartedly and to seek his help.

God’s help may come in many forms. He gives strength to the weary, provides food for the hungry, gives grace to the humble, gives wisdom to whose who ask, destroys devil’s work and works all things together for the good of those who love him. If we pay attention to the moments of our lives, we will see that his help is subtle, constant, and ever-present.

Therefore, let us not allow our circumstances to blind our eyes. Take time to meditate:

- Our God, the Maker of heaven and earth, is our help.

- Our Lord Jesus Christ, our merciful High Priest, is able to save us completely.

- The Holy Spirit, our Advocate, teaches us concerning all things.

Then, ask yourself today: with such a great Triune God here to help us—what shall we fear?

How God will help us

7Who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD frees the prisoners. 8The LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD raises up those who are bowed down. The LORD loves the righteous. 9The LORD preserves the foreigners. He upholds the fatherless and widow, but he turns the way of the wicked upside down.

29He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31but those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

6But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

28We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. 31What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things?

12For he will deliver the needy when he cries; the poor, who has no helper. 13He will have pity on the poor and needy. He will save the souls of the needy. 14He will redeem their soul from oppression and violence. Their blood will be precious in his sight.

5But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

8He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed: that he might destroy the works of the devil.

28We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.

16For most certainly, he doesn’t give help to angels, but he gives help to the offspring of Abraham. 17Therefore he was obligated in all things to be made like his brothers, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. 18For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

15For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin. 16Let’s therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace for help in time of need.

24But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable. 25Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.

16I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever:

26In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. 27He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.

27As for you, the anointing which you received from him remains in you, and you don’t need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, you will remain in him.

His help can deliver us from all our enemies

10Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

1I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 3He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

6The LORD is on my side. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? 7The LORD is on my side among those who help me. Therefore I will look in triumph at those who hate me. 8It is better to take refuge in the LORD, than to put confidence in man. 9It is better to take refuge in the LORD, than to put confidence in princes.

3Don’t put your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no help. 4His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish. 5Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD, his God,

9Who will bring me into the strong city? Who has led me to Edom? 10Haven’t you, God, rejected us? You don’t go out with our armies, God. 11Give us help against the adversary, for the help of man is vain. 12Through God we will do valiantly, for it is he who will tread down our adversaries.

3For strangers have risen up against me. Violent men have sought after my soul. They haven’t set God before them. Selah. 4Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the one who sustains my soul.

5Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.” 6So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

God helped his people by parting the sea and defeating their enemies (Exodus 14:10-31)

10When Pharaoh came near, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them; and they were very afraid. The children of Israel cried out to the LORD.
11They said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us out of Egypt?
12Isn’t this the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”
13Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today; for you will never again see the Egyptians whom you have seen today.
14The LORD will fight for you, and you shall be still.”
15The LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Speak to the children of Israel, that they go forward.
16Lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. Then the children of Israel shall go into the middle of the sea on dry ground.
17Behold, I myself will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will go in after them. I will get myself honor over Pharaoh, and over all his armies, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.
18The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD when I have gotten myself honor over Pharaoh, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.”
19The angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them.
20It came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. There was the cloud and the darkness, yet it gave light by night. One didn’t come near the other all night.
21Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
22The children of Israel went into the middle of the sea on the dry ground; and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
23The Egyptians pursued, and went in after them into the middle of the sea: all of Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.
24In the morning watch, the LORD looked out on the Egyptian army through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and confused the Egyptian army.
25He took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them heavily; so that the Egyptians said, “Let’s flee from the face of Israel, for the LORD fights for them against the Egyptians!”
26The LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.”
27Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it. The LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.
28The waters returned, and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even all Pharaoh’s army that went in after them into the sea. There remained not so much as one of them.
29But the children of Israel walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
30Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.
31Israel saw the great work which the LORD did to the Egyptians, and the people feared the LORD; and they believed in the LORD and in his servant Moses.

Jesus helped Peter by reaching out his hand (Matthew 14:22-31)

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”
28Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”
29He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.
30But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Prayer

Abba Father in heaven,

we thank you for lavishing your great love on us, that we may be called children of God. Since you are our Father, we know you are always willing to help us and uphold us.

Every day we face different challenges, and at times we feel weary and exhausted. Lord our God, remind us that you, the Maker of heaven and earth, are our help, so that we will not be discouraged or lose hope. By the blood of Jesus, we now have this confidence to approach the throne of grace, to receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Holy Spirit,

continue to strengthen our hearts and teach us to rely on you in all things, so that we may boldly declare, “The Lord is our helper, we will not be afraid!”

In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen!
