Are you doubting the leadership of God simply because he is invisible? Each time we fall into the trap of doubt, we can meditate on how God led his people out of Egypt into the promised land. Then we can boldly declare: the same God who led his people with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night will also lead us!

Today, we live in the time of grace, where the Holy Spirit dwells in us individually. He is God. He speaks to us and guides us personally and intimately. Let us practice seeking his guidance in everything we do and in every place we go. Let us not harden our hearts if today we hear his voice, but walk in obedience to fulfil his perfect will for us.

Stand firm, have confidence in him, and anyone who believes on him will never be put to shame.

God’s leadership revealed in the old testament

1Now the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.

21The LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night:

36When the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward, throughout all their journeys; 37but if the cloud wasn’t taken up, then they didn’t travel until the day that it was taken up. 38For the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

30The LORD your God, who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31and in the wilderness where you have seen how that the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”

10Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Hivite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, and the Jebusite out from before you. 11Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passes over before you into the Jordan.

1After this, David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” The LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” He said, “To Hebron.”

19David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?” The LORD said to David, “Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

10For the LORD says, “After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

21And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

11And the LORD will guide you continually, satisfy your soul in dry places, and make your bones strong. You will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters don’t fail.

9A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

God’s leadership revealed in new testament

13However, when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.

14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.

29The Spirit said to Philip, “Go near, and join yourself to this chariot.”

19While Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men seek you.

2As they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Separate Barnabas and Saul for me, for the work to which I have called them.”

6When they had gone through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7When they had come opposite Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit didn’t allow them.

Prayers from the psalms pleading for god’s leadership

1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing. 2He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

9He will guide the humble in justice. He will teach the humble his way.

8I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

23Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. 24See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

4Show me your ways, LORD. Teach me your paths. 5Guide me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation. I wait for you all day long.

11Teach me your way, LORD. Lead me in a straight path, because of my enemies.

8Lead me, LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies. Make your way straight before my face.

2From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

14For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death.

24You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

Trust his leadership & walk in obedience

8By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.

33You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.

5Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

7Therefore, even as the Holy Spirit says, “Today if you will hear his voice, 8don’t harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

8I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

2Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4Whenever he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

22But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

25If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.

God leads David to secure the victory (2 Samuel 5:22-25)

22The Philistines came up yet again and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
23When David inquired of the LORD, he said, “You shall not go up. Circle around behind them, and attack them in front of the mulberry trees.
24When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then stir yourself up; for then the LORD has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”
25David did so, as the LORD commanded him, and struck the Philistines all the way from Geba to Gezer.

Prayer

Lord Our God,

We declare that you alone are our great Leader!

Sometimes we have fear of future in our hearts, may you strengthen our faith and trust you that you will lead us in every step in our lives. Sometimes we may hear your words wrongly, Lord, turn us back to the right way and continue guiding us to the end.

Holy Spirit,

TThank you for your still small voice that speaks to us. May you sharpen our ears to be more sensitive to your guidance. We want to follow you wholeheartedly and walk in obedience into the destiny you’ve prepared for us.

In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen!
